A community of isolation.
Tichilesti is a secluded community in the Tulcea district, Romania. It was founded in 1918 as a leprosy community.
Later, during Ceausescu’s time, Tichilesti was completely locked down from the rest of the country and their existence was denied. After that, their position was improved inside Tichilesti and society. The people from there stayed, however, because they had everything and they had no business outside the village anymore.
Nowadays, Tichilesti has about twenty residents.
